Snowbirds and seasonal residents: managing prescriptions between two homes
Splitting the year between Florida and somewhere colder is a great life, but it's hard on prescriptions, labs and pharmacy benefits. A little setup each fall helps.
Before you head south
- Ask your home doctor for 90-day supplies with enough refills to cover the season
- Get due labs done before you leave, and keep copies
- Update your mail-order address, or move to a pharmacy chain that operates in both states
- Carry a current medication list and photos of every label
Medicare Part D and pharmacy networks
Most Part D plans have national pharmacy networks, but preferred-pharmacy pricing and mail-order rules vary. Medicare Advantage plans may have narrower networks outside your home area. Call your plan before the season to confirm which Florida pharmacies are in network.
Canadian snowbirds
Florida pharmacies generally can't fill Canadian prescriptions, and brand names often differ. Bring your original packaging. If you run short while physically in Florida, the physician can review a U.S.-available equivalent, and you'd pay the pharmacy's cash price unless your travel coverage reimburses it.
Where we fit
We can help while you are physically in Florida. Once you're back home, your regular clinician takes over. Our parent practice also serves Texas patients at americaretelehealth.us.
Common questions
Can I get my prescription refilled in Florida if my doctor is up north?
Yes, if you're physically in Florida and the medicine is established and non-controlled. Your doctor may also be able to send a prescription to a Florida pharmacy; many can, for non-controlled medicines.
Can you keep refilling my medicine when I go back home?
No. We can only treat you while you're physically in Florida. When you leave, your home clinician takes over.
Does Medicare cover a telehealth refill visit with you?
We don't bill Medicare or other insurance for Florida visits. The review is $39 self-pay. Your Part D plan may still cover the medicine at the pharmacy.
