Short answer: Yes, if you already take atorvastatin and you're physically in Florida. For $39, Nicholas Atudonyang, MD, a physician with Florida telehealth registration TPME8031, reviews your dose, your last cholesterol panel, any muscle symptoms and your other medicines. If continuing is safe, the prescription goes to the Florida pharmacy you choose. A glass of Florida grapefruit juice now and then is generally fine; large daily amounts are not.

About Atorvastatin

Atorvastatin (Lipitor) is a statin. It lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. It's taken once a day, at any time of day.

What the physician reviews before refilling

  • Your dose and last dose
  • When you last had a cholesterol (lipid) panel; once stable, many clinicians recheck about once a year
  • Muscle aches, weakness or dark urine
  • Liver disease or heavy alcohol use
  • Pregnancy, plans for pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Medicines that raise statin levels, such as clarithromycin, some HIV and hepatitis C drugs, cyclosporine and gemfibrozil

Safety points

  • Mild muscle aches are fairly common. Muscle pain with weakness and dark, tea-colored urine is rare but needs urgent evaluation.
  • Statins are usually stopped during pregnancy. Tell the physician if you are pregnant, planning to be or breastfeeding.
  • Don't stop on your own because of aches; tell the physician, as a different dose or statin often works.
Get urgent care for severe muscle pain or weakness with dark urine.

Florida tips

  • Grapefruit: occasional servings are generally fine with atorvastatin, but drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than about a liter a day) can raise drug levels.
  • Seasonal residents: a lipid panel can be drawn at a lab in Florida or at home before you travel. Bring or upload the result.

Cost

The $39 covers the physician review. You pay for atorvastatin separately at your pharmacy. Generic versions are usually much cheaper than brand names; ask for the cash price or use a free discount card. We don't bill insurance, but your pharmacy can run the prescription through your own plan.

Questions about Atorvastatin

Do I need new labs to refill atorvastatin?

Not always. If your last cholesterol panel was within roughly the past year and you have no new symptoms, the physician can often continue it. If it has been much longer, you may be asked to get labs, sometimes with a short supply in the meantime.

Can I take atorvastatin at any time of day?

Yes. Atorvastatin works the same morning or night. Taking it at the same time each day helps you remember.

Can you refill ezetimibe or other cholesterol medicines too?

Yes. Ezetimibe (Zetia), rosuvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin and fenofibrate are reviewed the same way. Tell us everything you take.
