About Lisinopril

Lisinopril (Zestril, Prinivil) is an ACE inhibitor. It treats high blood pressure and heart failure and is often used to protect the kidneys in people with diabetes. Most people take it once a day. It also comes combined with hydrochlorothiazide (Zestoretic).

What the physician reviews before refilling

  • Your exact dose and when you took your last one
  • Recent blood pressure readings from a home cuff or pharmacy machine
  • When you last had kidney function and potassium blood tests. These are usually checked at least once a year, more often with kidney disease
  • Any dry cough, dizziness or swelling
  • Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant
  • Other medicines, especially potassium supplements, potassium salt substitutes, spironolactone, lithium and anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen

Safety points

  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat (angioedema) can happen even after years on lisinopril. It is an emergency.
  • Lisinopril is not used in pregnancy because it can harm the developing baby. Tell the physician right away if you could be pregnant.
  • A dry, tickly cough is a common side effect. Tell the physician; switching to an ARB such as losartan is a common option.
  • Avoid salt substitutes that contain potassium unless your clinician approves them.
Call 911 for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing.

Florida tips

  • Heat, heavy sweating, vomiting or diarrhea can dehydrate you. With lisinopril that can cause dizziness and strain the kidneys. Drink fluids on hot days, and ask a clinician what to do with your dose if you can't keep fluids down.
  • In hurricane season, keep at least a two-week supply and a photo of the pharmacy label with your emergency kit.

Cost

The $39 covers the physician review. You pay for lisinopril separately at your pharmacy. Generic versions are usually much cheaper than brand names; ask for the cash price or use a free discount card. We don't bill insurance, but your pharmacy can run the prescription through your own plan.

Questions about Lisinopril

Can I get lisinopril refilled online in Florida without seeing my doctor?

If you already take it and you're physically in Florida, a $39 telehealth review is often enough when your blood pressure is controlled and your labs are reasonably recent. If your readings are high, you have new symptoms or it has been a long time since kidney tests, the physician may ask for labs or recommend in-person care.

Can you refill lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide?

Yes. Combination pills such as lisinopril-HCTZ (Zestoretic) are reviewed the same way. Tell us the exact combination and strength on your label.

I've been out of lisinopril for a few days. What should I do?

Don't take extra pills to catch up. Check your blood pressure if you can and include the readings with your request. Very high readings with chest pain, severe headache, confusion, weakness or trouble speaking need emergency care.
