About Losartan
Losartan (Cozaar) is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It treats high blood pressure, helps protect the kidneys in type 2 diabetes with kidney disease, and is a common choice for people who got a cough on an ACE inhibitor such as lisinopril. It also comes combined with hydrochlorothiazide (Hyzaar).
What the physician reviews before refilling
- Your exact dose and strength, and your last dose
- Recent blood pressure readings
- Your last kidney function and potassium blood tests
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when you stand up
- Whether you also take an ACE inhibitor such as lisinopril; the two are generally not combined
- Potassium supplements, salt substitutes, spironolactone, lithium and regular anti-inflammatory use

Safety points
- Losartan is not used in pregnancy. Tell the physician right away if you could be pregnant.
- Rarely, it can cause swelling of the face, lips or throat. That's an emergency.
- Stand up slowly if you feel lightheaded, especially in the morning or after a hot shower.
