College students in Florida: refilling medicine away from home
Your home doctor may be hundreds of miles away and licensed in another state. Campus health centers help, but appointments fill up fast at the start of a semester.
What we can help with
- Rescue and controller inhalers
- Antidepressants you're already stable on
- Thyroid, allergy, acid reflux and acne medicines you already use
- Other established, non-controlled maintenance medicines
What we can't prescribe
Stimulants for ADHD (Adderall, Vyvanse, methylphenidate), benzodiazepines, sleeping pills and any other controlled substance. Talk with your home prescriber or campus health about those; many have specific processes for students.
Tips for students
- Choose a pharmacy near campus or one in the same chain as your home pharmacy so prescriptions transfer easily
- If you're on a parent's insurance, you can usually use it at the pharmacy
- Keep a photo of each label on your phone
- If you're struggling with your mental health, campus counseling and 988 are there 24/7
Common questions
I'm an out-of-state student. Can you treat me?
Yes, if you're 18 or older and physically in Florida during the visit. Your home state doesn't matter; your location during the visit does.
Can you refill my ADHD medication?
No. ADHD stimulants are controlled substances and we don't prescribe any controlled medicines.
Will my parents see the visit?
Your health information is private. If you use a parent's insurance at the pharmacy, the plan's statements may show the prescription.
